Works in this category usually generate fear through distortion of reality, pairing the dreamlike fare of surrealism with the darkness and dread of horror. Not all “experimental” works are surreal, of course: some works in this category generate their effects through other linguistic and narrative techniques outside the standard principles of storytelling.
